Monks (and nuns as well) greatly influenced the improvement
of beer. As in other cultural aspects they had the manpower to specialize
in subjects such as literature, arts, medicine and, of course brewing.
During the middle ages a monk was allowed to drink 4 measures a day, in
a rich monastery about 8 liters (2 gallons). Because of their 40 day season
of Lent, when no food was allowed to be eaten they invented more substantial
brews, - the strong- and Bock beers. Containing more calories and much stronger
in alcohol than regular brews, they helped them to survive these hard times.
According to the rule drinks do not break the Lent. Thus, they found a smart
way to fill their stomachs! |
